Eight Peaks of Serious Powder
Up in northern Honshu, Aomori Prefecture's Hakkoda area is often overlooked as most folks head for Hokkaido when getting on a flight. With extended Shinkansen service and an airport close by, Hakkoda is becoming well known with backcountry experts and people who want to escape the crowds of the Kanto area. With ungroomed runs and few boundaries the area is well suited for experienced riders and skiers.
Hence it's no suprise the the eight peaks of Hakkoda attract Japan’s most hardcore powder seekers. The resort features a 100-person gondola that takes 10 minutes to the top of the mountain with four trips per hour. When you get off, you will see it is basically all backcountry. Visibility can get bad during snowstorms which occur often, so it’s best to find a local guide to show you around, so you can get the most out of your powder trip.
